HVAC-R

The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program is an instructional program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to install, repair and maintain commercial and domestic heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Instruction includes theory and application of basic principles involved in conditioning of air (cooling and heating); filtering and controlling humidity; operating characteristics of various units and parts; blueprint reading; use of technical reference manuals; the diagnosis of malfunctions, overhaul, repair and adjustment of units and parts such as pumps, compressors, valves, springs and connections; and repair of electric/electronic and pneumatic control systems.

Students enrolled in the class learn basic electric as it applies to the electrical power sources and circuits used in heating and air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Various hands-on training simulations are used to teach basic repair and maintenance of equipment. Students will learn to solder and braze as well as use other forms of connections for copper tubing refrigerant lines.

Instruction also includes design and fabrication of cut work, blue print reading wiring diagrams, and installation of electrical hook ups to power sources.

The students will also use acetylene torches, electrical meters, compound gauges, and other field related hand tools to remove and/or replace parts in any heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
